Did you know there are only enough qualified electricians (and in fact, all home service providers) throughout our service area that there is only enough time to spend half a day in each house every 5 years?
How did this happen?
I think the real reason is we trades professionals have to spend the bulk of our time on the day-to-day business of making a living, and as a result have not made the effort to train “clones” of ourselves to service the increasing population. Many times we haven’t even trained anyone to replace ourselves. This is not a criticism by any means, just an observation. Also, even though the trades are great providers of excellent livings, they are really hands on and frankly, that means a lot of hard work and effort must be put forth that many in this day and age refuse to expend.
What does this mean to you?
Mostly it means that when you need service in your home it becomes a pretty frustrating experience with telephone tag, missed appointments and service technicians under so much pressure to get to the next call that not enough time is spent truly assessing the requirements of the homeowner, including a quick safety inspection to make sure there are no life threatening hazards in the system. Sometimes this pressure causes potential problems to be glossed over.
What should you do?
When you make an appointment to have a trades professional in your home have a specific list of things that you want dealt with and ask him to also make time for an assessment of whatever system he specializes in. There will likely be a nominal charge for this service, but what price peace-of-mind? If an on-going preventative maintenance plan is offered review it carefully and take advantage of it. At the very least you’re getting your system looked at annually.
What we’ve done.
Over the past thirty years we have put five electricians (sixth one in progress) through the apprenticeship program to completion as licenced journeymen. Our electricians are dispatched to a home knowing that they are to spend as much time as necessary to diagnosis any situation and provide the options available. They also do a 12 point assessment of the electrical system at each call and leave the info with the homeowner. We do offer a Club membership that provides an annual assessment, including smoke/CO cleaning, testing and battery renewal if required. Each electrician is committed to making sure his clients are taken care of during the initial visit and in the future (guarantees, warranties 24/7 front of the line service).
Got to go, just received a service request
