Is a portable generator right for you?

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Are you away from your home for extended periods of time?A portable generator provides a level of convenient power, can protect the contents of your fridge and freezer and run septic, water or sump pumps only when you are home to manage it.
  2. Do you have a safe, convenient, secure storage location to keep a portable generator and fuel when not in use?The whole point of a portable generator is that it is portable. This makes it a tantalizing target for thieves. When running it, be sure to choose a location that is out-of-sight from passerby’s.
  3. Will you be comfortable wheeling a portable generator to it’s working location from its storage location in an outage?Portable generators are well-balanced and have good wheels for relocating, but they are not easy to lift. An 8 KW generator weighs approximately 240 lbs (about 110 kg).
  4. Are you comfortable refuelling a portable generator during an extended outage? You can expect to get about 10 hours of power from an 8 KW portable generator before needing to refuel.
